About Ancient Beliefs

The overall design of this sculpture is an upside-down cruciform symbol on wheels. A multiplicity of picture symbols are used in numerous cultures—West African pattern symbols have often been subliminally displayed in fabric, ceramic and fiber art. Secretive messaging has been known to exist before, during and after slavery times.

Here we see an anthropomorphic figure traveling on chariot-like wheels adorned with double-headed serpents, pursued by evil, both from the north and the south. She is ascending and morphing simultaneously—in other words, adapting.
