There were many disciplinary methods for keeping slave people in line. The beating of the slaves was a form of empowerment, and of striking fear into the entire slave community. But in reality, it usually fed the fires of freedom-seeking.
One diabolical tactic utilized with pregnant slaves was to place them in a hole in the ground, where the body could barely move, and whip them. The young woman’s body was unable to fall forward or backwards, therefore keeping the unborn safe from injury. Overseers and other slaves themselves were used to perform this inhuman treatment of unfortunate beings.
